It is of course of utmost importance to ensure that you are placed in the correct group; you want to be challenged, but not feeling out of your depth!

Please read our basic guidelines to help you to select the group that is the best fit for your current level. Listed are some of the highlights for each of the short courses.

When you are ready, you can book your place on the course here and receive your free 15-minute assessment via Zoom. If you are an absolute beginner, the group you should join is probably obvious, but you are still welcome the 15-minute call if you would like to get to know your tutor and ask any questions before the course starts.

10 week Short Courses

Absolute beginner

No prior knowledge of the target language; starting from scratch. The aim of this course is an overall introduction to the language, including basic grammar and vocabulary to help you to start interacting with French speakers.  This course includes:

  • Reading a menu & ordering

  • Hotel reservations & check-ins

  • Infinitive & regular present tense verbs

  • Shops & places

  • Buying tickets

  • Greetings & introductions

  • Numbers & prices

  • Singular & plural

  • Likes & dislikes

  • Negatives & forming questions



Beginner

Knowledge of a few phrases and a small amount of vocabulary, for example that you have used on holiday to “get by”. Limited or no knowledge of verb conjugations & grammar.

The aim of this course is to help you to further your basic knowledge of French and enable you to speak in a wider range of situations and form more complex sentences.  This course includes:

  • Giving opinions

  • Talking about your hobbies, family & where you live

  • Accepting & refusing invitations

  • Talking about the weather

  • Adjectives & agreement with nouns

  • Talking about upcoming plans

  • Understanding directions

  • Talking about your daily routine

  • Irregular verbs in the present tense

  • Telling the time

  • Shopping for clothes



Beginner-intermediate

A transition stage; reasonable vocabulary level and some grammar knowledge; present tense verb conjugations and perhaps one or two other tenses. Starting to build sentences and wanting to speak but struggling to put sentences together.

The aim of this course aims to strengthen your grammar knowledge to allow conversation beyond the present tense.  This course includes:

  • Expressing possession

  • Impersonal phrases 

  • Connectives to build sentences

  • Describing objects

  • Describing photos

  • Describing appearance & personality

  • Regular past tense (passé composé with avoir) – talking about finished actions in the past

  • Irregular past tense (passé composé with être)

  • Discussing film, TV & books




Intermediate

Good knowledge of vocabulary and grammar; you have studied several tenses and would like to focus on improving your conversation skills.

The aim of this course is to use your existing grammar and vocabulary knowledge to help you dive into the past tenses to talk about a greater range of situations.  This course includes:

  • Giving advice 

  • Pronouns & prepositions

  • Idiomatic expressions

  • Imperative - Giving instructions & commands

  • Present subjunctive - Expressing feelings & emotions

  • Regular past tense (imparfait) – talking about habits & descriptions in the past

  • Telling stories & anecdotes in the past

  • Techniques for reading French from real-life sources

  • Understanding French at a more natural speed

  • Speaking about the future

Conversation Classes

Intermediate

A weekly class with a friendly group to discuss a range of topics in French on order to improve conversational fluency.
